Join us for a discussion of Jane Austen’s beloved classic Sense and Sensibility, which follows sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood as they navigate love, loss, family, and the social expectations of Regency-era England. Through the sisters’ contrasting approaches to life, Elinor’s reason and Marianne’s passion, Austen explores the complicated relationship between emotion and restraint while offering a witty critique of class, marriage, and the limited choices available to women. First published in 1811, the novel remains a timeless exploration of love, family, and the pursuit of happiness.

The conversation will be facilitated by Dr. Jennifer Smith Daniel and Claire Lechtenberg.

Dr. Jennifer Smith Daniel is the Director of Learning & Writing Support Programs at Queens University of Charlotte with a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition from UNC Greensboro. You can find her scholarship in Community Literacy Journal, Praxis: A Writing Center Journal, Composition Forum, and Better Practices: Exploring the Teaching of Writing in Online and Hybrid Spaces. She enjoys working with college students because it is a time of discovery and considers writing as a path to that discovery. She is currently the Secretary for the Global Society for Online Literacy Educators (GSOLE) and the NC Representative for the Carolinas Writing Program Administrators. She is certain that she and Jane Austen would be besties.

Claire Lechtenberg is a graduate of Queens University of Charlotte, where she studied English Literature: Creative Writing and Communications. She was named the 2025 Outstanding Emerging Fundraising Professional by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Charlotte Chapter and was recognized in 2026 as one of Queens University of Charlotte’s “10 Under 10” alumni. Her work reflects a deep belief in the power of film, storytelling, and the arts to build meaningful connections and cultivate a thriving cultural community in Charlotte.
