Join IPH at South Boulevard Library on Wednesday, November 12, for a free community screening of Banned Together (2024).

Banned Together (2024) is a compelling documentary that chronicles the journey of three high school students from Beaufort, SC: Isabella Troy Brazoban, Elizabeth Foster, and Millie Bennett; as they confront the sudden removal of 97 books from their school libraries. These books, many highlighting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ experiences, were pulled following challenges from community members, igniting a broader conversation about censorship and educational freedom.

The students, united through the Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization (DAYLO), transition from local advocates to national figures in the fight against book bans. Their activism leads them to engage with prominent authors, policymakers, and constitutional experts, including Jodi Picoult, Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, and Congressman Jamie Raskin. The film delves into the influence of groups like Moms for Liberty and examines the broader implications of restricting access to diverse literature in public education.

Directed by Kate Way and Tom Wiggin, Banned Together not only highlights the students’ resilience but also serves as a call to action against the rising tide of censorship in schools across the United States.
