Join us for a conversation with filmmakers Christopher Cuevas and Manuel Saldaña as they discuss the cultural relevance and social impact of psychological horror. Together, they will discuss the influences that shape their creative practices, the ways horror can reflect and challenge cultural anxieties, and the stories that inspire their work. The conversation will also explore their journeys through the independent film industry, including the challenges and opportunities of developing, producing, and sharing meaningful work outside of traditional studio systems. From navigating the realities of independent filmmaking to building community and finding an audience, Cuevas and Saldaña will offer insight into their experiences as emerging voices in contemporary cinema.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Christopher Cuevas discovered his passion for filmmaking through a lifelong love of cinema and the arts. Inspired by the cultural richness of New York City and encouraged by his mother to explore its theaters, museums, galleries, and performances, he developed a creative voice rooted in authentic storytelling.
Now based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Cuevas is a self-taught filmmaker, videographer, and film educator at Charlotte Secondary School. Influenced by directors such as Spike Lee and Robert Rodriguez, he creates films that blend bold perspectives with polished craftsmanship.
Cuevas’s work has been recognized as an Official Selection and Second Place winner at the Charlotte Black Film Festival. One of his original stories, after being optioned by a producer, has gone on to receive more than 15 film industry awards. He is also the founder of Focal 4 Fridays, a monthly showcase celebrating local filmmakers and creating opportunities for filmmakers to connect with audiences and one another.
Cuevas’s filmmaking philosophy is simple: “Edgy yet polished—that’s my thing.”
