Join us for the announcement of the 2026–2027 Patel Emerging Fellowship Cohort (Central Piedmont, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Johnson C. Smith University), along with additional details about the program’s expansion to include filmmakers who are not currently enrolled in academic institutions.

The event will also feature a screening of the short film The Damned Thing, directed by Maya Haston, followed by a Q&A with the production team.

The Damned Thing is more than a horror story—it is a haunting allegory about truth, trauma, and the invisibility of injustice, told through the eyes of William Harker, a young Black writer caught between the violence of the seen and the unseen. Adapted from Ambrose Bierce’s 1893 short story, this screenplay reclaims the narrative through a modern Southern lens, weaving psychological horror with sharp social commentary.

This story deserves to be told now because it reflects the urgent realities of post-truth America—where video evidence can be erased, testimonies are questioned, and the color of one’s skin can determine the legitimacy of one’s story. In the age of body cameras, courtroom erasure, and re-traumatized witnesses, The Damned Thing cuts into the disquieting question: what happens when the truth is visible but still dismissed?

Maya Haston (director, writer):  Maya Haston is an award-winning director, screenwriter, and producer dedicated to telling stories that deserve to be told—films that center underrepresented voices, explore emotional depth, and confront societal truths through bold, genre-driven storytelling. With over eight years of experience and leadership at M.E.T. Productions and Carmichael Studios, Maya has been recognized for her work with the Best Student Film award at the Direct Monthly Online Film Festival (Carassius Auratus), an Official Selection at the London Global Film Awards, and multiple accolades from the 48-Hour Horror Film Project, including Audience Choice, Best Sound Design, and Honorable Mention – Best Scare. Her work blends psychological nuance with visual intensity, inviting audiences to witness the unseen and feel the unspoken.

Tiana Howard (producer, 1st AD):  Tiana Howard is a writer, producer, and co-founder of M.E.T.Productions. A 2024 alum of the University of North Carolina Greensboro, where she studied media studies, film, and creative writing, Tiana has worked on several student and independent short film productions, including M.E.T. productions’ award-winning 2024 release, Carassius Auratus. Her love of producing extends to her passion for mentoring with the nonprofit film organization, Black Girls Film Camp, where she mentors Black teen directors and helps make their short film ideas from start to finish as a contracted production coach. She has produced BGFC films, such as Sole Sista (2024), which has been internationally selected and awarded at film festivals including the Mill Valley Film Festival, Diversity in Cannes, and the International Film Festival of Australia.
Emma Welborn (producer, boom operator):  Emma Welborn is a writer, director, producer, and cofounder of M.E.T. Productions. She is a passionate Film major at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, committed to storytelling through cinema. Emma has worked on numerous independent short films, some of which have garnered awards and recognition for their creativity.
