The Charlotte Film Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, creating communal experiences through cinema to inspire and celebrate what connects us as humans. Our commitment to this goal is exemplified by our operations of The Independent Picture House,  as well as our annual Charlotte Film Festival, and throughout Charlotte area communities as we foster cultural connections through film. Founded in 1982, the Charlotte Film Society continues to serve as a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a choice in moviegoing experiences.

Construction of the Independent Picture House in 2021

In June of 2022, The Charlotte Film Society expanded its vision and opened The Independent Picture House. The community arthouse cinema operates 365 days out of the year, and is dedicated to screening independent, foreign, and arthouse film. Our non-profit also manages the Charlotte Film Festival, Charlotte’s premiere annual film festival.

The Independent Picture House Mission Statement

Non-profit community cinema that screens diverse, foreign, arthouse & independent film focused on educating, engaging, and enabling individuals through the powerful medium of film.

Charlotte Film Festival Mission Statement

We strive to bring the most innovative independent cinema to Charlotte, NC for our festival patrons and film enthusiasts from neighboring states. The Festival has evolved, but what remains consistent is our mission to “DISCOVER DIFFERENT” and to provide the highest quality festival experience for filmmakers and audience members.
