The epic saga continues as Luke Skywalker, in hopes of defeating the evil Galactic Empire, learns the ways of the Jedi from aging master Yoda. On May 21st, 1980, the sequel to the smash hit film STAR WARS was released in 127 cinemas nationwide … and in Charlotte, it opened at one cinema, Park Terrace (see 1980 ad below). Join us on May 21st, 2025, 45 years to that day, for a special screening of the film to celebrate the release and legacy of the greatest sequel (and best Star Wars film) ever made!

**Dan Brooks, co-author of the new Star Wars Encyclopedia from DK Publishing, will be on-hand to sign copies of the book. Copies will also be available for purchase.

The Force works in mysterious ways: In a surprise addition to our 45th anniversary screening of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, IPH and Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) are proud to present a special Talkback Q&A with the legendary Joe Johnston following the landmark film.

Johnston served as visual effects art director on Empire and was a key creative talent on the entire original trilogy — before becoming an acclaimed filmmaker in his own right, directing classics including The RocketeerJumanji, and Captain America: The First Avenger; most recently, he helmed season two of the revealing Light & Magic docuseries on Disney+, chronicling ILM’s many innovations in the digital era.
The conversation will be moderated by Dan Brooks, Lucasfilm alum and co-author of the new Star Wars Encyclopedia from DK Publishing. We would be honored if you would join us.
***The newspaper ad pictured above is just for reference. Showtimes, ticket info and presentation format in the ad are referencing the 1980 release and not the current release screening at IPH.
