This is an ultra-rare opportunity to experience Harry Smith’s Mahagonny, one of the most legendary underground films. This epic four-screen movie was inspired by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s opera. Much of it takes place in NYC’s notorious Chelsea Hotel, featuring counterculture luminaries like Patti Smith.
Harry Smith was one of the secret shapers of 20th Century American culture. He’s best known for his seminal Anthology of American Folk Music, which won him a Lifetime Grammy. He’s also one of the most important experimental filmmakers, lauded by Timothy Leary for shifting visual perceptions and expanding consciousness. As a testament to his contributions to modern art, The Whitney Museum recently opened a major retrospective of his works.
These screenings are FREE, thanks to a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts.
They are part of the Avant Goodyear series and a collaboration between Goodyear Arts, The Independent Picture House, and Mint Museum.
