On Monday, September 25, Lagueria Davis, director of “Black Barbie: A Documentary,” and Jay Morong, creative director of the Independent Picture House, festival director of the Charlotte Film Festival and senior lecturer of theatre and film at UNC Charlotte, spoke with Charlotte Talks With Mike Collins to discuss the importance of this film and the festival.
After the incredible impact and reach of Greta Gerwig’s 2023 “Barbie” film, “Black Barbie: A Documentary” delves into the transformative arrival of Mattel’s groundbreaking Black Barbie. By examining the ways that the absence of black images in the “social mirror” left Black girls with few opportunities for self-reflection — and dissecting the complex cross-section of merchandise and representation — “Black Barbie: A Documentary” celebrates the Black women who refuse to be invisible and their struggle to elevate their own voices and stories.
